URBAN LAND PROGRAMME

URBAN LAND

The Urban Land Programme works with landless groups linked to the Coalition of the Urban Poor (CUP).

In this regard the programme follows CORC’s normal procedure of assisting CUP to mobilize communities into the broader network and then assisting the Federation of the Urban Poor (FEDUP) to prepare and enable communities and citywide networks of communities to play a central role in settlement upgrading, relocations and citywide development as a whole.

The Urban Land Programme has spearheaded a partnership between FEDUP and the Methodist Church. In terms of this partnership the Church will attempt to fast-track a land transfer programme, in terms of which organized, landless communities will receive tenure rights and proceed with sustainable developments.

This partnership has led to a smaller spinoff agreement with the Southern African Catholics Bishops Conference.

The Programme is currently focusing on development in Cape Town (Klipfontein), the inner city in Durban (Smith Street) and in Umtata.

The Urban Land Programme also conducts settlement profiles in the countries large metropolitan areas. To date it has profiled all informal settlements in Johannesburg and Cape Town Metropolitan areas. The Cape Town profiles are to be turned into a live, community (savings scheme) managed cadastral.
